Program Objectives

The goal of this program is to provide introductory training in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer medicine in the primary care setting.

The CME course will provide the clinician with a range of skills at an introductory level including the ability to:

  • Diagnose common skin cancers and associated conditions
  • Perform skin checks and identify suspicious skin lesions
  • Use a dermoscope and the 3-point checklist to differentiate between benign and suspicious skin lesions
  • Understand, select and apply appropriate treatment options for common skin cancers
  • Safely excise and close small and low risk skin cancers with direct suture
  • Understand limitations in training and experience, and consequently know when to refer patients to the appropriate specialist: dermatologist, plastic surgeon and/or other medical practitioners

This course assumes no prior knowledge or specific training in the diagnosis and management of skin cancer in primary care.

The CME course is designed to meet the needs of medical practitioners who are interested in primary care skin cancer medicine: primary care physicians, dermatology nurses and rural doctors. Since 2006 over 2,000 medical practitioners have attended the certificate courses from ten countries worldwide.

CME Course Format

The CME course is designed to meet the needs of busy medical practitioners by providing a comprehensive flexible program with the majority of requirements conducted in your own time.

The course includes:

  • A 2 day weekend practical procedural workshop
  • Full colour folder including reference materials and all PowerPoint slides presented
  • On-line training in Dermoscopy (200 image quiz using the 3 point checklist)
  • On-line mutiple question quiz to be completed in your own time within 6 months of attending the workshop segment of the course

Workshop Delivery

This course features two on-line training programs including a 200 image Dermoscopy training quiz and 88 multiple choice questions. The training program is to be completed at your convenience within six months of the completion of the workshop.

The training program is designed in such a way that it does not have to be completed in one sitting with the ability to log in and out as many times as they wish.

This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 12 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Relationship to the Master of Medicine

The CME course is related to the two unit course in the Master of Medicine (Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine) IMED 7001. Students who wish to gain credit for this unit in the Masters will be required to complete the assessment requirements of the Masters under University of Queensland assessment conditions.

Students will not be required to pay for this unit again and will need to inform the University of Queensland Masters coordinator if they wish to seek recognition of prior learning (RPL) upon enrolling for the course. Doctors planning to study for the Masters degree but seeking a reduced study load initially will find this CME course a useful option.
